What is a call number?

Answer

A call number can be thought of as an address. It provides you with a way to find the physical location of a library resource, such as a book or a DVD. The call number is typically placed on the spine of a book (or other item) and begins with one or two letters followed by a series of numbers (the last four are usually the publication year).

Most academic libraries use the Library of Congress classification system while most public libraries use the Dewey Decimal system.

Example: Here is the call number for Ybor City Chronicles: A Memoir by Ferdie Pacheco - F319.T2 P33 1994
